Mission

Dr. Cate Crowley, three certified speech-language pathologists, and 15 master's students in speech-language pathology at Teachers College Columbia University visit Ghana to work with people with communication disabilities.  This is our ninth trip to Ghana. While in Ghana we share and exchange knowledge and skills about culturally and linguistically appropriate speech-language therapy with our Ghanaian colleagues--SLPs, nurses, doctors, and special education teachers. Our goal is to create sustainable programs in Ghana and for our students to return to the U.S. with much better understanding of how to create effective communication systems enhance our patients/students functional participation in their homes, schools, and communities.

While in Ghana we work with the ENT and cleft palate teams at Korle Bu and Akomfo Onochye Teaching Hospitals and with special education "unit school" teachers from throughout Ghana and the Autism Awareness Care and Training Centre in Accra.  This will be the sixth year that students and supervisors from Teachers College have gone to Ghana to provide free speech and language services to people with disabilities.
